Jones, Suarez Turning Into Road Racing Contenders But Can’t Get Key Victory Sunday

Neither Erik Jones nor Daniel Suarez have much road racing experience. Suarez, came through the NASCAR ranks in Mexico which saw a lot of their races contested on ovals. Jones, well all of his background was on short tracks. So, when NASCAR visits Sonoma and Watkins Glen, neither were initially listed among the favorites. But, as both have now made two starts during their Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series career on those tracks, we now have to take notice.

Toyota Puts 4 Cars In The Top 5 On Sunday

Toyota looked to be the class of the field this weekend. While Chase Elliott in a Chevrolet was strong, the four Joe Gibbs Racing and the Furniture Row Racing car of Martin Truex Jr. were arguably the strongest overall. In the opening practice session on Saturday and even in qualifying later on in the afternoon on yesterday, the five Toyota cars clearly had the most speed. In the race, they’d put four cars in the top five of the finishing order.

Elliott Wins 1st Career Cup Series Race In Thrilling GoBowling at The Glen

Chase Elliott had to be wondering over the final laps of Sunday’s GoBowling at the Glen, what could possibly go wrong next? Elliott, has been snakebitten over the years as heading into this weekend’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Watkins Glen, he was 0-for-98. Among those 98 races were eight runner-up finishes. He had countless opportunities but something would go awry in the end to keep him locked out of victory lane. On Sunday though, everything finally went right.

While the results are unofficial, Toyota can celebrate on Saturday a solid qualifying effort out of their Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series camp at Watkins Glen. Depending on Sunday’s inspection, three drivers will roll off in the first 2 Rows for Sunday’s GoBowling at The Glen (2:30 p.m. ET/NBC/MRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) as Denny Hamlin earned the pole with a speed of 125.534 mph in knockout qualifying on Saturday evening. Joey Logano Wins A Thrilling Zippo 200 At Watkins Glen

Team Penske started 1-2 and nearly finished there on Saturday at the Watkins Glen International. While most would think that this wasn’t much of a show if you look at the box score, it was very much one of the better races of the season in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. For the third time in the last four years, Joey Logano drove to victory lane in the Zippo 200. Logano, made a bold move to get by Ryan Preece on Lap 74 and never looked back en route to his…

McDowell Could Really Shake Up Playoff Field With Win Sunday In Watkins Glen

I’ve been talking about him all week and as we head into Sunday’s GoBowling at the Glen (2:30 p.m. ET/NBC/MRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) Michael McDowell is backing up my claims that he could be a big sleeper this weekend. McDowell, is a road racer by nature. His lone NASCAR victory came at Road America in the NASCAR XFINITY Series a few years ago. In fact, most of his racing background is in road racing. The only reason he hasn’t had more success in NASCAR on road courses is all due to…

Toyota Teams Strong In 1st Session, Chevrolet In Final Practice At Watkins Glen

It really should come to no surprise whatsoever that the top manufacturer in Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series action at Watkins Glen this weekend was that of the Toyota camp. Among the “Big 3”  drivers this season, Toyota has two of them (Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Busch). The Toyota camp has also won each of the last two years at Watkins Glen and enters with some big momentum. Truex, is the defending race winner and won the first road course of the 2018 season back in June at Sonoma.…

It’s An All Penske Front Row As Logano Earns 4th Straight Zippo 200 Pole

Brad Keselowski narrowly knocked his Team Penske teammate of Joey Logano off of his throne when it comes to Busch Pole qualifying in the NASCAR XFINITY Series at the Watkins Glen International. Every year since 2015, Logano had earned the Zippo 200 pole. On Saturday, Logano had his No. 22 Ford fastest in the first round of qualifying and on top of the leaderboard in the second and final round as well. The last driver to have a shot of knocking him off was Keselowski.
