Regan Smith Set To Race Brickyard Without Any Practice

INDIANAPOLIS – Regan Smith was on a golf course this past week when he got a call from the team owner of Leavine Family Racing that Kasey Kahne would miss this weeks Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race and that they’d like Smith to replace him. Obviously, Smith agreed to run the No. 95 Chevrolet. But, what Smith didn’t know then, was that he’d hop into a Cup car for the first time in well over a year and do so without any practice time at his disposal.

Defending Brickyard 400 Champion Kasey Kahne To Miss Race On Sunday, Regan Smith To Sub

Kasey Kahne hopped out of his car after last Sunday’s Southern 500 at the Darlington Raceway and immediately went to the infield care center. He was treated to heat exhaustion. Unfortunately, due to still feeling the effects of that illness, Kahne will not be able to defend his 2017 Brickyard 400 win this weekend. Leavine Family Racing announced the move Thursday evening, namin Regan Smith as the No. 95 Chevrolet’s replacement driver for Sunday’s Big Machine Vodka 400 at the Brickyard (2 p.m. ET/NBCSN/IMS Radio Network/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

Bubba Wallace Jr. to Fill in for Aric Almirola at Pocono This Weekend, Until Almirola Can Return

NASCAR has scheduled a teleconference for 11 am on Tuesday morning, with what’s expected to be an announcement that Darrell “Bubba” Wallace Jr. will fill-in for Aric Almirola in this weekend’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at the Pocono Raceway. Almirola, was injured in a wicked crash at the Kansas Speedway on May 13 and has been sidelined with a broken back ever since. His timetable to return was 8-12 weeks.

With Aric Almirola out indefinitely, Richard Petty Motorsports needs a replacement driver for the interim. In last weekend’s Monster Energy Open, RPM tabbed Regan Smith as the replacement. This weekend, Smith will drive the No. 43 Ford again, this time in the Coca-Cola 600 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Smith, drove to a fourth-place finish last weekend and did so with only 85 minutes of practice under his belt.
