5 Takeaways From Sunday’s Iowa Corn 300

For the first time of the 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series season, I was watching and covering the racing from afar. It will be like that next week too as I’m still on the NASCAR side of things. Don’t worry, I’ll be back at the end of the month at Mid-Ohio. With that being said, I was able to watch the race just like everyone else on Sunday. What I saw, well there were some interesting storylines to come out of the Iowa Corn 300. Here are my main takeaways.

Hinchcliffe Passes Newgarden With 44 Laps Left To Win Bizarre Iowa Corn 300

I wrote earlier in the week that we shouldn’t take the Schmidt Peterson Motorsports duo lightly for Sunday’s Iowa Corn 300. Just look what they’ve done in the previous ovals in 2018. James Hinchcliffe started fifth, led 20 laps and finished sixth back at the ISM Raceway in April. In Texas, he charged from his 15th starting spot to bring his No. 5 Honda home fourth. He did it again on Sunday. Hinchcliffe, started 11th but by Lap 20, he was battling for positions inside the top five. What about…

Pigot’s Chance To Shine Is Now

The pressure is on Spencer Pigot this weekend at the Iowa Speedway. Pigot, in his first season as the full-time driver with Ed Carpenter Racing, has scored only two top 10 finishes in 10 tries during the 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series season. While some would say he needs more time, he’s made 32 career INDYCAR starts and has seven top 10 finishes in those. I agree that the kid can be a star in this series is given the ample amount of time to adjust, but this is a cut…

Andretti, Penske, Ganassi Cars Class Of Iowa Corn 300 Field

The Verizon IndyCar Series will take to the 7/8-mile Iowa Speedway for Sunday’s Iowa Corn 300 (2 p.m. ET/NBCSN/INDYCAR Radio Network). After Saturday’s first practice session and qualifying to set the field for tomorrow’s race, it’s clear that Sunday’s winner will likely come from the Andretti Autosport, Team Penske or Chip Ganassi Racing camps. Shocker, I know.

Power Earns 52nd Career INDYCAR Pole With Penske 1-2-4 Starting Spots In Iowa Corn 300

For nearly the second time in the last three Verizon IndyCar Series races, the Team Penske trio could have started 1-2-3. They did so in the last oval race at Texas and if not for Ryan Hunter-Reay, would have done so again for Sunday’s Iowa Corn 300 (2 p.m. ET/NBCSN/INDYCAR Radio Network) at the Iowa Speedway too. Instead, they’ll have to settle for three cars in the first 2 Rows.

SPM Duo Looking For Another Solid Iowa Corn 300 (2 p.m. ET/NBCSN/INDYCAR Radio Network) Run

I don’t think anyone is giving Schmidt Peterson Motorsports enough credit for just how good that they’ve been on ovals this season. Yes, James Hinchcliffe missed out on the Indianapolis 500 in May, but look at what he’s done on the other two ovals in 2018. Hinch, started fifth and finished sixth back in April at Phoenix. He also led 20 laps that night. In Texas, he charged from his 15th starting spot to bring his No. 5 Honda home fourth. What about his rookie teammate Robert Wickens? The Canadian…

I Need A Win and We As A Team Need a Win, It’s That Simple” Says Rahal Heading To Iowa

Other than a mistake at Belle Isle where Graham Rahal crashed out and finished 22nd, the Rahal/Letterman/Lanigan Racing driver has finished inside the top 10 everywhere else. He’s had a consistent fifth to 10th place car all year long. In the nine races excluding Belle Isle 1, Rahal has finished fifth through 10th in eight of them. One of those finishes that stands out was a ninth place finish at a short oval in Phoenix. With all these stats being said, Rahal grabbing a top 10 finish in Sunday’s Iowa…

Kanaan Eyeing Another Iowa Top 5

Its been an improving year for Tony Kanaan in 2018. While he and AJ Foyt Racing aren’t close to where they want to be yet, they’re actually on the right track. Where he’s been at his best has been on the three ovals. He started ninth and finished eighth back in April at Phoenix and started 10th and was likely a top three car before crashing out in the May 27 Indianapolis 500. While his best finish though was seventh place effort in the second race on Belle Isle a…

Andretti Autosport With 7 Wins In 11 Iowa Tries, Can Sunday’s Iowa Corn 300 (2 p.m. ET/NBCSN/INDYCAR Radio Network) Give Them An 8th

No one and I mean no one has been better at the Iowa Speedway than Andretti Autosport. The Verizon IndyCar Series has been visiting the 7/8-mile oval for 11 years now and in those 11 races, Andretti has been in victory lane seven times. Can they go 8-for-12 in Sunday’s Iowa Corn 300 (2 p.m. ET/NBCSN/INDYCAR Radio Network). Odds are, yes. Also, the Andretti cars went 1-2-3-4 in last weeks test there. Prior to the aerokit era that began in 2015, Andretti won seven of the first nine races in…
