Sauter Won’t Be Returning To GMS Racing In 2019, Says Moffitt Likely His Replacement

On Tuesday, it was announced that Brett Moffitt officially won’t be returning to Hattori Racing Enterprises. Austin Hill was signed and announced as their driver.

Well, Moffitt’s biggest competitor for the 2018 Truck Series championship was Johnny Sauter and his GMS Racing ride. A little over 24 hours after HRE announced their new driver, GMS revealed that Sauter won’t be back with them either.

Sauter, joined GMS in 2016 and has been a championship favorite ever since. He won 13 times over the past three seasons including two of the last three season openers at Daytona. The Wisconsin native also reached victory lane six times last season including 10 top five finishes in the first 11 races.

He won the title in his first season with the team in 2016 and finished second and fourth the last two years respectively. Now, the team is going to go in a different direction.

It’s shocking news as no one saw this one coming. Between Sauter and Moffitt, they combined to win 12 of the 23 races last season.

But, Sauter did give a wrinkle to this story on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. To his understanding, the team is signing Moffitt to replace him as he said he just found out about this within the last day or so and that it’s financial related.
