NBC revealed a brand new commercial during Sunday’s NFL WildCard weekend broadcast between the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears that featured a promo previewing the 103rd Running of the Indianapolis 500.
It was a national spot commercial, one that IndyCar Series fans have been wanting for years. See, prior to the upcoming season, the series has been featured on not just NBC Sports but ESPN/ABC too. The Indy 500 has always been part of the ABC Sports package. Unfortunately, ABC didn’t give the series a whole lot of attention.
This year, the full season goes to NBC Sports and while everyone was already cheering for that, the move to put an Indy 500 commercial in January for a national audience in such a big stage shows the respect the new TV contract has. But, did the 15 second promo actually reveal something bigger too?
See, the series is still searching for an entitlement sponsor. There are reports out there that the series is close to landing a deal and an announcement could come as soon as this month. There are also reports that NTT Data could be the lead player in this whole thing.
Well, if you watch the promo that aired on Sunday evening, most of the footage is shown with a driver and “NTT Data” as the sponsor on the visor of the helmet. Granted, it could be a coincidence as NTT Data is a primary sponsor with Chip Ganassi Racing and featured on the No. 10 Honda with Felix Rosenqvist, but it’s also been on the No. 9 Honda of Scott Dixon who is the defending series champion. It could also be a teaser of what’s left to come too.
