Two months ago, Sebastian Vettel looked well on his way to winning his fifth career Formula One championship. He held an eight point lead over Lewis Hamilton in the standings and coming off of a win in Hamilton’s home race of the British Grand Prix.
At that point of the year, Vettel had four wins and six podiums through the first 10 races. The Ferrari’s had more speed in them than the Mercedes’.
Then, the fall out started happening.
Over the last seven races, Vettel has one win and just four podiums. Meanwhile, Hamilton has six wins and a runner-up. His Mercedes rival hasn’t finished worse than second since July 1. Vettel, has only two second place finishes in that same time frame.
His eight point lead has fallen to a 67 point deficit with only four races remaining in the season. Hamilton, could actually clinch the championship in the next race in Austin, Texas.
That’s how off Vettel’s season has gone. He went from dominating early on to possibly watching his rival clinch the title three races early.
Did anyone see that coming?
