The top dog in the NASCAR XFINITY Series lately has been JR Motorsports. They put multiple drivers in the Championship 4 in each of the last two seasons. Heading into the Round of 8, they have three bullets in their chamber. Can they move at least two of them onto Homestead for a third straight year?
Well, if they’re going to do so, they need to improve.
Justin Allgaier’s bad luck spell ended two weeks ago with a third place run in Dover. Prior to his two bad races to start the playoffs off with, he had seven top three finishes in his final eight starts in the regular season. Furthermore, he carried 14 straight top 10 finishes with him into the playoffs. But, on 1.5-mile tracks this season, Allgaier has just three top five finishes in seven tries.
The next two races are on 1.5-mile tracks. At Kansas, the site of this weekend’s race, Allgaier has just two fifth place runs in seven tries.
What about Elliott Sadler?
He hasn’t had a finish better than fifth since Daytona in July. That’s his only finish better than fifth since the start of June. He’s struggled as of late with finishes of sixth, 14th and 11th respectively in the first round. Luckily, he has four fifth place finish on 1.5-mile tracks in 2018 and six top eight finishes.
The other driver is Tyler Reddick. He has just two top five finishes in his last 19 starts on the season. On 1.5-mile tracks, Reddick has five finishes of 19th or worse in seven tries.
As you can see, they have the capability, but Sadler needs to get more runs inside of the top five and Reddick just needs to get to fifth.
