The final three spots of the NASCAR XFINITY Series playoffs are up for grabs on Saturday at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Currently, Ryan Reed is 90 points up on the bubble in 10th. Ross Chastain is 11th, 75 points clear. Rookie Austin Cindric is on the bubble, but he’s 57 points up. The only reason two of these three haven’t clinched is because only 33 points separate Reed and Cindric.
If Ryan Sieg, Michael Annett, Jeremy Clements or Alex Labbe win Saturday’s DC Solar 300 (5 p.m. ET/NBCSN/PRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) then they grab one of the final three spots. That leaves the final two spots to be fought between Reed, Chastain and Cindric. Since any of those three can pass each other in the standings, none of them want to be the lowest in terms of points scored for the season.
It’s the same situation that Alex Bowman and Jimmie Johnson were in on the Cup level at the Brickyard.
While it’s a long shot that any of those four not already in will win on Saturday, the odds of the other three being caught in terms of points are slim to none. After all, they’re driving Cup caliber cars.
Reed, is in his normal Roush/Fenway Racing entry while Cindric shifts to the No. 22 Ford with Team Penske and Chastain in the No. 42 Chevrolet for Chip Ganassi Racing. Those are top rides.
The No. 22 Ford has two wins on 1.5-mile tracks in 2018 to go along with a runner-up and fourth place finish. In six starts on 1.5-mile tracks, that car has finished in the top 10 in all of them.
Same for the No. 42 Chevrolet. That car has also won twice on 1.5-mile tracks, including the spring race at Vegas back in March. The car has five top seven finishes in six starts too.
It’s game over in the bubble race for points. Sieg, Clements, Annett nor Labbe are catching a Penske or Ganassi car in the points standings. They have to do the unthinkable and win.
