It was a preconceived notion that two of the four Championship 4 spots in the NASCAR XFINITY Series at the Homestead-Miami Speedway would belong to Justin Allgaier and Christopher Bell. While it’s still very likely that the duo make it to Homestead, two more sleepers are emerging to join them.
I’d watch out for the Richard Childress Racing duo of Daniel Hemric and Matt Tifft. They’re heading into the playoffs on hot streaks and driving as well as anyone with the exception of Allgaier.
Since Mid-Ohio, Hemric has three top five finishes in five starts in his No. 21 Chevrolet. He’s looked fast and like a legitimate contender. On 1.5-mile tracks this year, Hemric has a top 11 finish in all six tries including a runner-up in the last race on one at Kentucky in July. His last five finishes on 1.5-mile tracks were sixth, third, seventh, fifth and second respectively. He made the final round last year and looks even better this year.
His teammate Tifft has also been hot since Mid-Ohio too. In fact, his sixth place average finishing position since then is second best in the entire series. He’s finished fourth, 10th, second, eighth and sixth respectively over the last five weeks in his No. 2 Chevrolet.
While Hemric told me after his fifth place run at Indy on Monday that the team still needs to find a little more speed, I think they’re a sleeper to get both RCR cars to the final round in November.
