PORTLAND, Ore – Pato O’Ward ended the 2018 Indy Lights season the way it began, in victory lane. The Mexican driver charged from a seventh starting spot in Sunday’s season finale to his second straight win in as many days as he bookends the season with a win at St. Pete to a win in Portland.
He took over the lead on Lap 18 and never looked back en route to his ninth win of the year. O’Ward now has the Mazda Road to Indy scholarship money to race in the Verizon IndyCar Series in select races next season.
But, his talent has shown that he has full season potential.
Pole sitter Ryan Norman crashed on the opening lap and would finish last in eighth. Second place starter Aaron Telitz jumped out the lead after and would lead the opening eight laps before being passed by Santi Urrutia.
Telitz, would get back by Urrutia and would finish runner-up in his No. 9 Mazda. It was his ninth career Indy Lights podium finish.
Urrutia would settle for third in his No. 5 Mazda for his fourth straight top five finish to close out the year. Colton Herta wrapped up a second place finish in the final standings with a fourth place run in his No. 98 Mazda while rookie Victor Franzoni rounded out the top five.
