Bell Ties XFINITY Series Rookie Wins Record In Sweeping Both Races In Richmond

RICHMOND, VA – Its been a record setting year for NASCAR XFINITY Series rookie Christopher Bell. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver earned his 17th top 10 finish of the season in his victory in Friday night’s GoBowling 250.

Bell, admitted that he didn’t have the best car this weekend but his No. 20 Toyota still found its way to victory lane at the Richmond Raceway. He passed Matt Tifft on Lap 236 and led the final 14 laps en route to his sixth career XFINITY Series victory and fifth of the season.

The five wins as a rookie ties the series record with Greg Biffle (2001), Kyle Busch (2004) and Carl Edwards (2005).

By virtue of his victory, Bell automatically advances to the second round of the playoffs. It also earned him a season sweep of the races at Richmond.

Ross Chastain originally qualified third but he had to drop to the back prior to the start of the race. It wouldn’t take him long to move up as he’d finish the first stage in 10th. He’s then move up to fourth by the end of the second stage and there he was in the closing laps battling for the win. In his final start in the No. 42 Chevrolet, last weeks winner came home runner-up.

Daniel Hemric led 35 laps in a third place effort while Dale Earnhardt Jr. led a race high 96 of 250 laps in his first NASCAR race since last November.

Tifft rounded out the top five in his No. 2 Chevrolet for his sixth top 10 finish in the last seven starts of the year.

The race only had five cautions, the biggest was the final one of the night on Lap 225 when championship favorites Cole Custer and Justin Allgaier crashed with one another in Turn 3. Allgaier, would finish 32nd for his worst finish since early June ending a streak of 14 straight top 10 finishes. Custer, rebounded to finish on the lead lap in 15th. But, that bad result puts him with a tie with Brandon Jones for the final cutoff spot.

The series will race on the Charlotte ROVAL next Saturday afternoon.
