CLERMONT, Ind – There’s no secret, whenever Tony Schumacher decided to hang up his helmet, he’s going to be ranked right up there as one of the best there ever was in NHRA’s history. Schumacher, has eight Top Fuel championships, most ever. His 84 career wins in 497 races, also among the best ever. In 2016, he won his 10th Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, that too is most ever. Now, with a Countdown for the Championship spot already clinched, the 48 year old is looking for one thing and one thing only, an 11th win in the “Big Go.”
Schumacher, has had a decent season in 2018, as he sits second in the standings with one race to go in the regular season. He’s collected one win, a victory at Bristol and three runner-ups. But, only two of those four final round appearances have come in the last 13 races of the season. Yes, one was three races ago in Sonoma but other than that, he’s struggled to take his US Army dragster to the finals.
That’s something he wants to change before heading into the Countdown.
Schumacher, has been defeated in the first or second round in three of his last four races. Luckily, he’s scored enough points to maintain his place in the standings over the last three races, but no one ever wants to back their way into the playoffs and that’s the direction Schumacher is going right now.
In turn, that could all change on Monday too. If Schumacher can make run in Monday’ eliminations and even win his 11th US Nationals, he’d be among the top drivers to beat for this year’s championship.
