BROOKLYN, Mich – None of the bubble drivers could capitalize in Sunday’s Consumers Energy 400 at the Michigan International Speedway as Alex Bowman still holds the 16th and final playoff spot for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series postseason by 62 points leaving this weekend’s race.
Paul Menard, Daniel Suarez, Ryan Newman and Jamie McMurray tried to go off strategy in the end of Sunday’s race in hopes that they’d get a late race caution but it didn’t work and all had to hit pit road in the closing laps for the final time.
They’d all finish outside of the top 10 which allowed the margin to remain similar leaving Michigan as it was coming in.
Suarez didn’t get on the right strategy and earned his third straight top 11 finish. Newman and Menard finished 15th and 16th respectively. Bowman, was 19th.
Bowman leads Ricky Stenhouse Jr. by 62 markers while Menard (-70), Suarez (-82) and Newman (-86) are also in contention. The only problem is that there are only three races left in the regular season Bristol (Aug. 18), Darlington (Sept. 2) and Indianapolis (Sept. 9) and at this rate, catching Bowman on points aren’t likely going to be the way in.
Anyone behind Bowman in the playoff standings needs to win. It’s as simple as that.
