LONG POND, PA – Marco Andretti said on Saturday at the Pocono Raceway that he had a very fast race car under him this weekend. He proved that in Sunday’s ABC Supply 500. Andretti, restarted the race after an 1-hour, 56-minute red flag in 10th, but on the first lap of green flag action (Lap 12) Andretti improved five spots to fifth.
Coming to his second pit sequence, Bryan Herta made a call to move Andretti from a top five finish to a possible podium.
Herta, called Andretti down pit lane a few laps early but not too early to where they’d add another pit stop in the end. He did so to get him some clean air around the 2.5-mile Tricky Triangle and it paid off in terms of moving him past not just Scott Dixon but Josef Newgarden too.
Andretti ended the second pit sequence in third.
He’d maintain that the most of the way but due to not getting just one caution over the final 180 laps, he’d have to go in fuel save mode and bring his No. 98 Honda home seventh. It was his 100th career top 10 finish. It was also his best finish on his hometrack as he grew up around 25 miles away from the Pennsylvania race track.
Andretti’s previous best finish at Pocono was ninth in 2014. He led 88 laps in 2013 but finished 10th. Now, he gets a big momentum changer of a finish.
