DAYTONA BEACH, Fla – The two NASCAR XFINITY Series practices from the Daytona International Speedway on Thursday were polar opposites. The first session saw some drafting practice in which two-time Daytona winner Ryan Reed topped the speed charts with a lap of 196.143 mph around the high banked 2.5-mile oval. Reed, is 11th in the playoff standings and hoping to put his No. 16 Ford back in victory lane in Friday night’s Coca-Cola Firecracker 250 (7:30 p.m. ET/NBCSN/MRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).
He was followed by Justin Haley in his No. 24 Chevrolet. Haley, will be making just his second XFINITY Series start as he circled the track with a speed of 195.869 mph in his GMS Racing entry.
Ryan Truex (195.831 mph), Austin Cindric (195.520 mph) and Shane Lee (195.313 mph) rounded out the top five.
Final practice was as tame as you’d expect. On restrictor plate tracks, most of the big named teams get all they can get out of the opening session and if they come out unscathed, they sit final practice out. With the first 50 minute session running incident free, only 10 cars took to the track in the final 50 minute session.
Chad Finchum (185.567 mph), Timmy Hill (185.540 mph), Jeremy Clements (184.896 mph), Alex Labbe (183.135 mph) and Ray Black Jr. (183.016 mph) were the top five in final practice.
