Mercedes Suffers 1st Double DNF In 2 Years, Verstappen Capitalizes In Austrian Grand Prix Victory

Mercedes had the win in Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix signed and sealed but all they needed was it being delivered. Unfortunately, it got lost in the mail.

Both Valtteri Bottas as well as Lewis Hamilton suffered DNF’s in the race which handed the win to Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen.

Verstappen, earned his third straight podium finish in his No. 33 Renault as well as his fourth career F1 victory in dramatic fashion to give Red Bull their first ever Formula One victory on their home track.

See, since F1 has been coming to Austria in 2014, Mercedes has won every time. Bottas and Hamilton have also been 1-2 in nearly every session including qualifying. It was their race to lose.

They’d lose it too.

First, Bottas had a gear box issue in his No. 77 Mercedes. Then, Hamilton had a fuel pressure problem causing his No. 44 Mercedes to suffer his first DNF in 34 races. The last was in the 2016 Malaysian Grand Prix. The last time that both Mercedes drivers failed to finish in the same race was the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix.

To add insult to injury, Ferrari’s rounded out the podium with Sebastien Vettel’s third place finish propelling him to the points lead over Hamilton by one point. Kimi Raikkonen came home runner-up.

Verstappen, becomes the first driver other than Hamilton, Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo to win a race in 2018. Speaking of Ricciardo, he had troubles and had a DNF too, making three of the “Big 6” to suffer DNF’s.

In wake of that, Haas got double top fives with Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen finishing fourth and fifth respectively. It was by far their best day in F1 yet.
