Tony Kanaan is doing his job in 2018 of putting AJ Foyt Racing back on the right track. So far, it appears to be working. Now, Kanaan is aiming to keep his recent strength at Toronto going this weekend. While he’s never visited victory lane on the 1.786-mile street circuit and unless something drastic happens, it may not happen this weekend in Sunday’s Honda Indy Toronto (3 p.m. ET/NBCSN/INDYCAR Radio Network) either, this is still a race that Kanaan can get a top 10 finish in.
That’s not a shot at Kanaan either. We all know he’s talented. It’s just that Foyt isn’t quite there yet in terms of race winning pace. But, they’re getting closer and closer and that’s a testament to the popular Brazilian driver and his hard work to make that progress happen.
“Toronto is always a fun track to go to – it’s a really fast street course,” said the driver of the No. 14 Chevrolet. “I love the venue, it’s one of the most fun races of the year. I know we have a good street course car so I’m looking forward to maybe getting a podium for A.J. (Foyt) and cheer him up a bit. The fans in Toronto support INDYCAR big time there, and the city’s a lot of fun. We always take the kids. There are a lot of things to do and a lot of great places to go to dinner. We go to the aquarium all the time – they have a beautiful one downtown. Usually, we go on Saturdays because we finish up early at the track. We take the kids there and to the CN Tower. Toronto is definitely a fun place to go and not just to race but also because you can take your family and have fun, too.”
In Toronto, Kanaan has six top six finishes over his last eight starts there. On street courses, Kanaan has finishes of 11th (St. Pete), eighth (Long Beach), 14th (Belle Isle 1) and seventh (Belle Isle 2) respectively. As I said, the speed is there in his No. 14 Chevrolet to nab a top 10 finish this weekend.
Look at his past Toronto finishes and look at his stats on street courses in 2018 and you get a sleeper pick.
