DAYTONA BEACH, Fla – Mother nature reared her ugly head again on Friday as a severe thunderstorm popped up and hit the Daytona International Speedway just minutes before the scheduled start time for NASCAR XFINITY Series qualifying. On Thursday, rain interrupted final practice for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series too.
But, this is Daytona in July. It’s not too shocking.
With that being said, the lineup for Friday night’s Coca-Cola Firecracker 250 (7:30 p.m. ET/MRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) was set by owners points, meaning Ryan Preece will start on the pole for the 100 Lap race under the lights on the 2.5-mile high banked track. He becomes the 10th different pole winner in 16 races this season.
The reason Preece is on the pole is because the No. 18 Toyota that he’s driving this weekend sits on top of the 2018 XFINITY Series owners points. So, instead of Cole Custer who leads the drivers standings getting the top starting spot, it’s Preece instead. In fact, Custer will start third as Ryan Blaney in his No. 22 Ford with Team Penske starts second.
Daniel Hemric will start fourth and Elliott Sadler fifth.
