Kirkwood Makes Last Lap Pass For USF2000 Sweep In Road America

ELKHART LAKE, Wis – Sunday’s USF2000 Series weekend finale at Road America didn’t disappoint. The box score shows Kyle Kirkwood swept the weekend scoring his sixth win of the 2018 season, four of which consecutively, but Sunday’s race couldn’t have gone any more different than yesterday’s for the rookie driver.

On Saturday, Kirkwood started second but quickly found the lead and led all 12 laps en route to the victory on the 4.014-mile Elkhart Lake road course. On Sunday, he led only the final lap of action but it was the one that counted the most.

Kirkwood, passed Lucas Kohl on the final restart as the drivers took the green and white flag on Lap 11. He passed Kohl with a bold move in Turn 1 and never looked back.

Kaylen Frederick finished runner-up for the second straight day in his No. 24 Mazda as he too passed Kohl.

Kohl, who started third but led the first 11 laps fell to third place on the final lap in his No. 22 Mazda while Colin Kaminsky and Igor Fraga rounded out the top five.

The race had three caution flags as it was a battle for attrition on Sunday. The first lap had two separate incidents for Russell McDonough and Sabre Cook in Turn 1 and Jose Sierra and Max Peichel in Turn 5. Then, on Lap 5, we’d see Darren Keane and Kyle Dupell crash in Turn 12. On the Lap 8 restart, we’d see a four car crash in Turn 7 for the third caution flag of the day.

Overall, only 14 of the 26 starters finished the 12 Lap race.

Kirkwood now leads Alex Baron by 94 points heading to the next race weekend in Toronto.
