For 2nd Straight Year, Larson Earns Toyota/Save Mart 350 Pole (3 p.m. ET/FS1/PRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio)

Kyle Larson described road racing as a similar trait to racing on dirt. The way and finesse you have to drive around Sonoma and Watkins Glen reminds him of how to get around places like Eldora, Knoxville and other dirt tracks around the nation.

He’s showing he’s right in that assessment.

Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart were two of the better road racing drivers in recent history. They both have USAC backgrounds. Larson, well he just earned his second straight pole in wine country. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver circled the 1.99-mile road course in the second and final round with a speed of 94.597 mph in his No. 42 Chevrolet which netted him his second Busch Pole Award of the season and sixth of his career. He and his teammate Jamie McMurray started 1-2 last year.

This time, joining Larson on the front row is Martin Truex Jr. He qualified with a speed of 94.227 mph in his No. 78 Toyota, or just 0.09-seconds slower than Larson. It was his fifth front row starting spot of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season.

Chase Elliott will start third in his No. 9 Chevrolet while McMurray rolls off fourth in his No. 1 Chevrolet. McMurray now has four top four starting spots in the last six years in Sonoma.

AJ Allmendinger who was fastest in the opening round will start fifth in his No. 47 Chevrolet to give Chevy four of the top five starting spots on Sunday.

Defending race winner Kevin Harvick rolls off sixth.
