ELKHART LAKE, Wis – For the first five laps of Saturday’s Indy Lights Series opening race in Road America, Colton Herta battled pole sitter Victor Franzoni for the top spot. It was a fierce battle between the duo. But, on Lap 5, Herta forced his way by Franzoni and cruised to his fourth straight victory in his No. 98 Mazda. Herta, swept all three races last month at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and once again returned to victory lane.
This race though, he dominated.
In his previous three wins, he only led a handful of laps. On Saturday, the second generation driver led 15 of the 20 en route to his sixth career victory.
He had to hold off his Andretti Autosport teammate Patricio O’Ward near the midway mark but O’Ward over used his tires trying to get by Herta which allowed Herta to pull away in victory.
O’Ward got by Franzoni for second on the same lap Herta got by and cruised to his fourth top two finish in the last six races on the season in his No. 27 Mazda. He now trails Herta by 12 points heading into Sunday’s weekend finale.
Franzoni, settled for third in his No. 23 Mazda for his second third place run in the last three races. He’s now finished inside the top five in six of the eight races in 2018.
Santi Urrutia was fourth in his No. 5 Mazda for his third straight fourth place finish on the season. He now has 31 career top five finishes in his career in Indy Lights. Home state hero Aaron Telitz rounded out the top five on Saturday.
