Andretti Fastest On Fast Friday, Davison Crashes In Turn 2

INDIANAPOLIS – It should come to no surprise that Marco Andretti was the fastest man standing on Fast Friday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Andretti, turned out a blazing hot lap of 231.802 mph in his No. 98 Honda a little past lunch time to earn his fifth top five finish on the speed charts in as many sessions this week. But, like all his previous practice sessions, that lap was laid with a tow.

On the no tow list, Andretti came in 12th.

Robert Wickens was second overall on Friday with his lap too with a tow. He said in his press conference that he shouldn’t even be up there after receiving a big tow from two cars on his run. Wickens, circled the 2.5-mile oval with a speed of 231.732 mph in his No. 6 Honda. Like Andretti, Wickens was near the top nine on the no tow list coming in 10th.

Ed Carpenter was third quickest in his No. 20 Chevrolet with a lap of 231.066 mph. Carpenter, was in the top five in four of the five sessions this week with a worst result of eighth. He was also fourth on the no tow list as well.

Oriol Servia (230.247 mph) and Will Power (229.780 mph) rounded out the top five in a busy day that saw 1,280 laps turned. Most of those laps were turned early on as most of the teams thought rain was going to hit the Speedway area just past lunchtime. But, the precipitation never came, allowing for most of the teams to burn up their sets of tires early. That left a majority of the final few hours without much track time.

The first big crash of the practice week occurred when James Davison was pushing the limits of his No. 33 Chevrolet and crashed in Turn 2. The rear end of Davison’s car stepped out from under him in the apex of the corner as he spun and hit the outside SAFER barrier left side first as a result.
