It seems like all of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races at the Bristol (Tenn) Motor Speedway are all very unpredictable. While there are your usual heavy hitters, carnage can happen at any given moment and take the favorites out around any corner. That’s why we typically see some surprises up front in the finishing order.
This weekend, I wouldn’t count out either of the Roush/Fenway Racing drivers.
So far this season, both haven’t fared very well. They sit 22nd (Ricky Stenhouse Jr.) and 28th (Trevor Bayne) in the standings heading into Sunday’s Food City 500 (2 p.m. ET/FOX/PRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). That’s why I think these two could shake up the playoff grid later on if they could reach victory lane this weekend. Which in entirely possible.
Lets start with Stenhouse. Bristol is his best track. He has an average finishing position of 10.80. He also has five top 10 finishes in his last eight Bristol starts, including two of which runner-up efforts. His best finish this season is 14th. I think that changes on Sunday.
Bayne can contend too. He has five straight top 15 finishes at Bristol, including four straight in the top 12. He was seventh last August and fifth in the spring race in 2016. He’s also coming off of his season best finish last weekend in Texas.
So, if you’re looking for two potential surprises to win on Sunday, don’t count out Stenhouse’s No. 17 Ford nor Bayne’s No. 6 Ford either.
