LEEDS, Ala –The two Pro Mazda Series races this weekend at the Barber Motorsports Park couldn’t have been further from the same. Saturday’s race No. 1 was raced under mostly sunny skies and warm temperatures. Sunday’s weekend finale, well it was damp, cool and cloudy.
Parker Thompson was out to clean up a sweep of the weekend as he was fastest in practice on Friday, won the race on Saturday and earned the pole for both races. But, Thompson’s broom was kept in the hauler, as he led the first two laps before being passed by Harrison Scott on the third lap of Sunday’s race.
He’d never lead again and finish second in his No. 90 Mazda.
Scott, would lead the next seven laps before being passed by Andres Gutierrez on Lap 10. 11 laps later, Scott moved his way back by and never looked back en route to his first career series victory in his No. 10 Mazda. He led a race-high 12 of the 25 laps with the race ending under caution.
Scott, finished second on Saturday too.
The yellow was the only one for the race and was thrown for “poor conditions.” It was displayed just after Scott got by Gutierrez. While the finish is debatable, as these drivers do need experience in the rain, it also saved teams a lot of money too because none of the 16 drivers had ever raced in the rain before.
Carlos Cunha would come home third in his No. 1 Mazda, while Rinus VeeKay and David Malukas rounded out the top five.
Cunha, was 10th on Saturday, so he improved his finishing position seven spots in 24 hours. VeeKay won both races in St. Pete and followed that up with being fifth and fourth respectively at Barber.
Gutierrez led 11 laps but fell to seventh at the finish.
