INDIANAPOLIS – 12 months ago, Gabby Chaves and Harding Racing had zero prior Verizon IndyCar Series experience. They showed up to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway wide eyed and ready to learn. What they had accomplished when the checkered flag flied on the 101st Running of the Indianapolis 500 had the end of the month though, well that was nothing short of impressive.
Not only did Chaves and Harding complete every lap of the race, their first goal, they came away with a top 10 finish overall. Chaves, brought his No. 88 Chevrolet home ninth in the teams’ first ever race on racing’s biggest stage.
Two weeks later, Chaves would finish fifth at the Texas Motor Speedway. Now, they’re a full-fledged team showing back up a full year later at the same place where this all started.
On Monday, Chaves took to the famed 2.5-mile oval in a seven hour test session on a sun filled final day of April. Chaves, completed 81 laps overall with a top lap of 225.630 mph. That lap was good enough to put him fourth on the speed charts.
When you look deeper, you’d see that Chaves was fourth fastest in both test sessions on the afternoon too. That’s a great sign of things to come for the Month of May.
“Feeling really positive finishing P4 in both practice sessions today for the open test.,” said Chaves after the test session. “The No. 88 crew has worked so hard the past few months for the 2018 season and hasn’t had the chance to show it. I know we’re able to fight against these guys, so what better way than during the month of May. This is going to be fun.”
While test sessions are just that, test sessions, when one constant is true in both sessions, it becomes a norm. Chaves is showing that he and this team can contend for the 102nd Running on May 27.
