Rinus VeeKay Sweeps Pro Mazda Weekend in St. Pete

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla – Dutch rookie Rinus VeeKay had about as perfect of a weekend as one could in St. Pete. After nearly winning the USF2000 championship last season as a rookie then, he moved up to Juncos Racing and Pro Mazda competition in 2018. That move paid off. VeeKay not only won Saturday’s Pro Mazda season opener, but he backed that up with a victory in Sunday’s race as well.

VeeKay, got by Harrison Scott on Lap 5 and never looked back in leading the final 21 laps of the 25 lap event. It was also done from the pole in his No. 2 Mazda as well.

Second place starter David Malukas finished second too.

Scott, who started all the way back in seventh fought up to take the lead on Lap 2, but he fell back and came home 12th in his No. 10 Mazda. When VeeKay got by, it was all over.

Carlos Cunha brought his No. 1 Mazda home third for a 1-3 Juncos Racing finish on the podium. Sting Ray Robb would come home fourth in his No. 82 Mazda while rookie Parker Thompson rounded out the top five.

The series will return to action in a little over a month at Barber.
