AVONDALE, AZ – There’s not many drivers outside of Denny Hamlin that has had such a great start to the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season. Yes, Kevin Harvick is leaps and bounds better than everyone else right now, but Hamlin is right there on his tail.
In Daytona, Hamlin brought his No. 11 Toyota home third. The next week in Atlanta, he went off strategy and finished fourth in his Joe Gibbs Racing entry. Last weekend in Las Vegas, he was in the hunt for another top 10 finish, but a parts failure with 19 laps-to-go brought him down pit road for an unscheduled pit stop. He’d finish 17th as a result.
On Sunday in Phoenix, Hamlin was right there up front again.
He’d bring his car home in one piece with a fourth place finish in the TicketGuardian 500 at the ISM Raceway in Phoenix. Four races down, three top four finishes.
That’s a great start.
While he’d certainly like to cash those in for wins, he’ll take it at the moment.
Hamlin, now has five top 10 finishes over his last six Phoenix starts. Last Fall, he led a race-high in the laps led category, but didn’t get out of Chase Elliott’s way.
This Sunday, he proved that he may be Harvick’s top rival for this year’s championship.
