FONTANA, Calif – It’s March Madness time so the quote on quote sleeper or Cinderella is amplified this time of year. So, why not look at some sleepers to win Sunday’s Auto Club 400 (3:30 p.m. ET/FOX/MRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio)?
After three practice sessions in the book, here’s who I feel good about.
Clint Bowyer (40/1)
He’s a borderline favorite. Bowyer, finished third in Fontana last year and has been very fast so far in 2018. In fact, he’s had his No. 14 Ford up front all weekend thus far. Bowyer, was second, 10th and seventh respectively in practice and seventh and 16th on the 10 lap average charts too.
Erik Jones (25/1)
Jones, has three straight top 11 finishes on the season and has been very good on 2-mile tracks during his brief NASCAR career. As a rookie, Jones finished third last August in Michigan. He’s also been fast so far in Fontana, coming in third and sixth respectively on Saturday on the 10-lap average chart and eighth, 12th and 21st in his No. 20 Toyota on single lap speed in practice.
Austin Dillon (200/1)
His odds weren’t high in Daytona and guess what? He won. Well, Dillon can win you a lot of money on Sunday if things go to plan. Dillon, has a fast No. 3 Chevrolet under him. He was ninth, 26th and 14th on single lap speed. But, on a 10-lap run, he was ninth and fifth respectively.
Fontana has typically had a late race caution in the end. Four straight years we’ve gone to overtime. Dillon, has a win this year so they can gamble late if so.
Dillon, can win this race.
Ryan Newman (100/1)
Dillon’s RCR teammate has been quick this weekend too. Newman, was fourth, 13th and ninth respectively in the three practices. He’s also been pretty good at Fontana in the past as well.
Alex Bowman (100/1)
It’s been a rough season for Hendrick. Maybe things can go their way on Sunday after having such a rough week prior. Alex Bowman is a guy that can steal a win too. Bowman, was 10th, 9th and 11th in the three practices and has a fast No. 88 Chevrolet.
