DAYTONA BEACH, Fla – A little over a decade ago, Peyton Manning waved the green flag to start the Indianapolis 500. Now, the two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback will take part in the other big North American race.
Manning, will drive the pace car for Sunday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season opening Daytona 500 (2:30 p.m. ET/FOX/MRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). The track announced the move on Tuesday.
Not The Only NFL Quarterback In Attendance
Coincidentally enough, another NFL quarterback will likely be in attendance as Green Bay Packers star Aaron Rodgers just started dating driver Danica Patrick recently.
Nationwide Is On Your Side
Also, the race will have a Nationwide Insurance feel at the beginning.
Manning, is a spokesman for the company, as is recently retiree Dale Earnhardt Jr. The former NASCAR driver will be the grand marshal for the 60th annual tradition. But, they’re not the only Nationwide connections in the Great American Race on Sunday.
The pole sitter leading the 40 car field to the green will be Alex Bowman. He took over for Earnhardt in the No. 88 Chevrolet which also happens to be sponsored by Nationwide.
