Ahead of the Verizon IndyCar Series’ open test at the ISM Speedway, they gave the rookie drivers in the field for 2018 or drivers that haven’t raced on short ovals in the series before the track to themselves on Thursday. In that session, Matheus Leist topped the speed charts with a lap of 184.236 mph in his No. 4 Chevrolet.
Leist, turned 63 laps around the 1.022-mile Phoenix oval, backing up a great test at Sonoma on Monday with a stellar debut on an oval in the new 2018 car this afternoon.
Recently signed Dale Coyne Racing driver Pietro Fittipaldi was second quick after turning 139 circuits himself, the most in the session. His top lap was his 137th lap of the day with a speed of 183.347 mph in his No. 19 Honda.
Fittipaldi, was quick at Sebring a few weeks ago and backed that up with being fourth overall at Sonoma earlier this week. Now, he was even better being second among rookies.
