DAYTONA BEACH, Fla – For most of the PowersharesQQQ 300, Chase Elliott and Elliott Sadler looked to be among the drivers to beat in the NASCAR XFINITY Series season opener. Unfortunately for them, it appeared that their shots of winning went out of the window when they were penalized for locking bumpers.
On Lap 94, Sadler locked his front nose on his JR Motorsports teammate Elliott’s rear bumper pushing him down the backstretch. On Lap 97, they had to pit for the penalty infraction.
Luckily for them, a crash ensued one lap later and bunched the field back up. While they’d be 33rd and 34th respectively, they were back in the lead pack with clean cars. Then, two more cautions would fly afterwards, allowing them to move into the top 10.
Sadler though would have to come from the back again. He was spun on Lap 117, but again was aided by another yellow.
The big one occurred on the first lap of the first overtime. Sadler, wasn’t involved and Elliott escaped much damage on his end. They’d get back in the top 10 again.
We’d see five overtimes in total and the duo would come away with solid finishes. Elliott, even lost his right side window and had to pit, but he too was aided by another caution after.
Sadler would finish second in a photo finish to cap a wild day of racing.
