Johnny Sauter Wins NextEra Energy Resources 250 at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla – Johnny Sauter made a daring move on the backstretch of Friday night’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season opener at the Daytona International Speedway which ended up paying off for great dividends for him.

Sauter, reinherited the lead on Lap 92 and never looked back en route to a dominating win in the NextEra Energy Resources 250.

How good is Sauter?

He didn’t even remember making the pass, saying that he felt so confident today he had zero butterflies before strapping into his No. 21 Chevrolet for the 2018 season.

Sauter, cruised to his 18th career Truck Series victory, moving him into a tie with Dennis Setzer for sixth on the all-time wins list. The win also made him the all-time winningest Truck Series driver at the 2.5-mile track with three trips to victory lane (2013, 2016, 2018).

He led a race-high 39 of the 100 laps in the thrilling Truck race.

His GMS Racing teammate of Justin Haley finished second in his No. 24 Chevrolet. Haley, 18, wasn’t even old enough to race in this event last year and there he is finishing runner-up by just 0.098-seconds.

Haley, led nine laps, all in the closing stages.

Joe Nemechek brought his No. 87 Chevrolet home third while Ben Rhodes and Scott Lagasse Jr. finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Chevrolet landed four drivers in the top five of the finishing order and led 64 of the 100 total laps.

The race was full of action in the second half. The first 50 laps saw just three cautions, two of which for stage breaks. The final 46 laps saw four cautions with 19 of the 32 starters on Friday night being involved in an accident in some capacity. The two scariest was with Jennifer Jo Cobb and Clay Greenfield.

Cobb, was involved in a Lap 54 incident when her No. 10 Chevrolet slid off the track and into the inside SAFER barrier on the front stretch.

Greenfield, hit the outside SAFER barrier extremely hard in Turn 4 on Lap 81, bringing out a red flag two laps later. Luckily, both were treated and released from the infield care center.

The series heads to Atlanta next weekend.
