INDIANAPOLIS – Over the last several years, the Mazda Road to Indy ladder system has been working to great lengths. On Tuesday, another talented young driver is seeing the benefits himself.
Rinus Veekay has landed a ride with Juncos Racing for the 2018 Pro Mazda season. Veekay, 17, ran one full season in the USF 2000 Series with Pabst Racing where the Netherlands native scored three wins to go along with 12 podium finishes. That was good enough to land him with a runner-up finish in the season championship.
Because of that fast success, Ricardo Juncos took notice.
Juncos, gave Veekay a test at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course last month and the teenager impressed his new team. That led to a ride for 2018 in which he will be funded by Jumbo Supermarkten, the biggest supermarket chain in his native homeland of the Netherlands.
This past season, Juncos Racing won their third Pro Mazda championship with Victor Franzoni and second Indy Lights crown with Kyle Kaiser.
Now, Veekay is hoping it’s his turn to add to the legacy.
