Avondale, AZ – Chevrolet entered this weekend’s NASCAR XFINITY Series race with a great shot of getting four drivers into the Championship 4 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. But, the fourth driver to advance on though, wasn’t who they thought it would be.
Daniel Hemric fought his way into the Championship 4 by virtue of his fifth place run in his No. 21 Chevrolet. It was his sixth top seven finish over the last eight races as he joins the three JR Motorsports drivers into the final round.
The final spot in the playoffs for the Championship 4 was left wide open early on. Coming into this weekend’s race, a different Chevy driver in Brennan Poole held onto the fourth and final position. He led Matt Tifft by a mere five points. But, Poole was trying to pass a driver making his first career XFINITY Series start in Turn 1 on Lap 22 and well, it went exactly as it sounds.
Poole, got into him and into the first turn SAFER barrier ending his day with a 36th place result. That meant he’d be eliminated and the final spot up for grabs between four drivers.
Hemric and Cole Custer capitalized the most. They had intense racing all day and even restarted up front in the end. Hemric and Custer went side-by-side over the last two laps with Hemric advancing on past Custer by just four points. They were 18 and 13 points out respectively entering today.
