Capsule Of Championship 4 For The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series

It’s youth vs. experience for this year’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship. Both veterans Matt Crafton and Johnny Sauter are in the Championship 4 as the duo have combined to win three of the last four Truck Series tiles. But, Christopher Bell and Austin Cindric are also in the mix to take home the championship hardware on Friday night at the Homestead-Miami Speedway too.

Who will take it home though?

Christopher Bell

2017 Stats

Wins: 5

Top 5s: 14

Top 10s: 20

Laps Led: 845

Championship 4 Appearance: 2

Outlook

Bell came up just short last season in his hunt for the championship as a rookie, but don’t expect him to give it up this year. While he may be moving up to a full-time ride in the NASCAR XFINITY Series in 2018, don’t overlook his confidence level right now. Bell, has seven straight top 10 finishes on the season, five of which were results inside of the top three. In fact, his worst playoff finish so far is an eighth place run at Martinsville. He’s led laps in all seven of those races and 18 of the 22 races this season as well. Also, Bell has just two finishes outside of the top 10 all year. He’s going to be a huge factor on Friday night.

Matt Crafton

2017 Stats

Wins: 1

Top 5s: 5

Top 10s: 15

Laps Led: 321

Championship 4 Appearance: 2

Outlook

Never count out a veteran. Yes, Crafton has just five top five finishes all season. Yes, he has led just 321 laps. Yes, he has just one win and that occurred on dirt. But, you can’t count out a previous champion who’s made 406 career starts with 14 wins and 241 top 10 finishes to his credit. Crafton, can win on Friday night and can do so in veteran fashion. He has five top 10 finishes over his last six starts too, but just one top five over the last eight starts. Don’t overlook Crafton.

Johnny Sauter

2017 Stats

Wins: 4

Top 5s: 12

Top 10s: 18

Laps Led: 455

Championship 4 Appearance: 2

Outlook

The defending series champion is back to defend his crown. While Bell is easily the favorite, Sauter has to be next in line. He also is a veteran of 220 career starts with 17 wins and 139 top 10 finishes himself. Sauter, started off the season hot with nine top 10 finishes in the first 10 races. Out of those nine top 10’s, seven of which were inside of the top three. He’s ending the season just as hot with eight top 10 finishes over the last nine races. Also factor in that Sauter has scored stage points in both stages of a race in 16 of the 22 races. As the only Chevrolet driver left, he’s going to have a good opportunity on Friday evening as he’s won two straight races.

Austin Cindric

2017 Stats

Wins: 1

Top 5s: 7

Top 10s: 15

Laps Led: 106

Championship 4 Appearance: 0

Outlook

Cindric’s appearance into the playoffs came controversially as he intentionally crashed Kaz Grala on the last lap in Canada to automatically put him into the postseason. Now, his spot in the Championship 4 doesn’t come without controversy either. With 21 laps left at Phoenix, he and Ben Rhodes made contact on a late race restart, which sent Rhodes into the wall and out of the race. Cindric, moved onto Homestead as a result. Now, here he is, the lone Ford driver left on a team that’s folding once the checkered flag falls at Homestead with a shot at a championship. Cindric, now has 13 top 10 finishes over his last 14 starts on the season. He’s one to watch.
