I don’t have him advancing past this round, but I could in turn regret that. Right now, I think Ryan Blaney is a sleeper driver to watch in the Round of 12. The reason? The three tracks in the second round of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs suit him.
First off is the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Sunday’s Bank of America 500 (2 p.m. ET/NBC/PRN). Blaney, won the XFINITY Series race at Charlotte back in May and loves to race on his home 1.5-mile track. No, he hasn’t had much luck on the Cup side though, but if we does this weekend, then watch out.
Next up after Charlotte is Talladega. Blaney, is really good on restrictor plate tracks and will have Ford’s power at the high banked Alabama superspeedway. He finished second at Daytona back in February in his No. 21 Ford.
Then, it’s on to Kansas where Blaney has an average finishing position of 11.40. He has three top seven finishes over his last four starts there, including a pole and a fourth place run in May where he led 83 laps.
So, if Charlotte goes to plan, then Blaney can move onto the third round without actually winning a race in the Round of 12. How impressive would that be?
