Watkins Glen, NY – Victor Franzoni entered this weekend’s title bout with Anthony Martin with a slim two point advantage in the Pro Mazda Series standings. At the end of the weekend, he left with the championship trophy in hand.
On Saturday, Franzoni started on the pole but Martin slipped by him on the opening lap and would lead the first 11 circuits. But, Franzoni just stalked his rival and got by him late in the race for the top spot back. He’d never look back en route to a thrilling victory.
Later on in the day, he qualified his No. 23 Mazda on the pole for Sunday’s season finale. Today though, he never relinquished the lead.
Franzoni, led all 20 laps en route to his third win in-a-row and seventh of the season as he topped Martin in the championship for 2017 as well. It was his first series crown as he wins the $750k scholarship to move up to Indy Lights next season. With Juncos Racing set to win the Indy Lights title with Kyle Kaiser, it’s only natural for the Brazilian to move up with the team too.
Martin, originally qualified third in his No. 8 Mazda, but he was penalized during qualifying on Saturday for running his laps after the completion of the session. He would start fifth instead. All he could muster was a third place finish which was his 11th podium in 12 races this season. But, it wasn’t enough as Franozni had a first or second place finish in all 12 races himself.
Carlos Cunha brought his No. 81 Mazda home second on Sunday, 1.5903-seconds behind Franzoni. Martin though, was 11.0633-seconds back of the title.
Nikita Lastochkin and TJ Fischer rounded out the top five in the finale.
