Watkins Glen, NY – A big sleeper to watch out for this weekend at Watkins Glen is Spencer Pigot. The young American driver is basically racing this weekend and in the season finale at Sonoma as an audition. While he’d like to remain with Ed Carpenter Racing next season, he’s also a free agent. He just wants a full-time ride in the Verizon IndyCar Series and he’s hoping these last two races of the season leave a lasting impression.
So far, this weekend has done just that.
In the first of two practice sessions on Friday at the Watkins Glen International road course, Pigot was sixth quickest in his No. 20 Chevrolet. He turned a lap of 1:23.8425-seconds. Not only was that a solid lap, but it was the quickest of the session overall out of the Chevrolet camp. Yes, his lap was better than all four Team Penske drivers.
In session No. 2, Pigot was 15th overall, completing 19 laps in that practice.
He’s definitely going to be a driver to keep an eye out on for Sunday’s INDYCAR Grand Prix at the Glen (1 p.m. ET/NBCSN/INDYCAR Radio Network). On natural road courses last season, he was 11th, ninth, seventh and 22nd respectively. So far this season, he’s been 20th, ninth, 12th and 19th respectively.
Last year, Josef Newgarden brought his ECR Chevrolet home second here. Pigot, is hoping he can have similar success, especially with this being ECR’s 100th race.
