Martin Truex Jr. Clinches Regular Season Title, Nearly Wins Southern 500

Martin Truex Jr. could be toasting his way to his motorhome tonight after clinching the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series regular season championship. Instead, he’s as frustrated as ever.

Truex, was nine left hand turns away from his second straight Southern 500 victory. Instead, he got into the Turn 3 SAFER barrier with three laps-to-go and had to limp his No. 78 Toyota home eighth on Sunday night at the Darlington Raceway.

Truex, would lead 79 laps tonight and would grab his sixth top 10 over the last eight races, but he was frustrated to be that close and not win.

Despite that though, with his Stage 2 victory in tonight’s race, Truex has now clinched the regular season title netting him 15 more bonus points for the playoffs. That gives him 52 total playoff points heading to the 10 race postseason.

The next best is Kyle Busch with 20 playoff points.

Yes, Truex has nearly triple the amount of playoff points as anyone else. That really means he can points his way to Homestead in November and he can hang his hat on that tonight.
