Denny Hamlin Wins The Southern 500

“The Flying 11” was certainly flying on Sunday night at Darlington, as Denny Hamlin went from a pit road entry mistake to coming back to win the Southern 500 on Labor Day weekend. Hamlin’s throwback paint scheme was a tribute to Ray Hendrick and his “flying No. 11” colors and it was fitting for how tonight’s race went for him too.

Denny Hamlin in Sunday’s Southern 500

Hamlin, was really in control of his own destiny in the closing stages of the race, but he entered pit road way too hot on his final stop and missed pit entry. He would have to go all the way back around the 1.366-mile Darlington Raceway one more time and lost 6-8 seconds as a result. He would come out 20 seconds behind the lead.

But, Hamlin would charge back through the field on the final green flag run and eventually catch Martin Truex Jr. in the end. Truex, would cut down a tire in Turn 3 with three laps-to-go which allowed Hamlin to easily get by and cruise to his second career Southern 500 victory.

Hamlin, also won the NASCAR XFINITY Series race on Saturday too, as he swept the weekend for the second time of his NASCAR career. The other ironicially came at Darlington too when he did it in 2010.

Hamlin, has 31 career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victories, 25th all-time and now 50 of his career. Seven of those 50 wins have come at Darlington.

It was also Hamlin’s eighth top four over the last 11 races.

His Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch would bring his No. 18 Toyota home runner-up for his third top two finish over the last five races and fifth straight top 10 effort.

Busch’s brother Kurt Busch would bring his No. 41 Ford home third for his second straight top five result and third top six over the last four races on the season.

Austin Dillon and Erik Jones would round out the top five.

Hamlin and Kyle Larson would each lead 124 laps on Sunday.
