At some point this season, Erik Jones is going to pull his No. 77 Toyota to victory lane in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season. Now, he has to hope that comes next Saturday night at the Richmond Raceway.
Jones, brought his Furniture Row Racing entry home fifth on Sunday night in the Southern 500, as it was his third straight top five finish on the season. It was also his fifth straight top 10 effort and seventh top 10 finish over the last nine races.
For a rookie, that’s remarkable as one would think with that type of momentum, he would be a tough out in the playoffs. Instead, he’s still 123 points out of the final playoff spot.
“I lost brakes completely for a minute then they came back,” Jones said of his night. “I never have had that happen before. We really had a really great night and to get a top 10 out of it was really good. Our car was really good during the day but when the sun went down it got hard.”
If Jones can win at Richmond, he will indeed be a very tough out as he’s driving like a championship contender right now. He’s running well in big races too.
Second in the Bristol night race and fifth in the Southern 500.
He’s going to be a star in this series.
