Maybe we should came him “Big Race Kurt” now. Kurt Busch won the season opening Daytona 500 back in February. In the next crown jewel on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season, he finished sixth in May’s Coca-Cola 600. Then, in the Bristol night race two weeks ago, Busch brought his No. 41 Ford home fifth.
In tonight’s Southern 500, the Stewart-Haas Racing driver would finish third.
Yes, that’s four top sixes in the four annual crown jewels on the NASCAR schedule.
But, for Busch, this is a huge statement for their playoff hopes. Busch, now has two straight top five finishes and three top six results over the last four races. He was 11th in the other race over the last five weeks.
Busch, said he didn’t have much for the Toyota’s tonight, but he and his team treated this weekend’s race at the Darlington Raceway like a playoff race. He said they prepared very well and prepared for this weekend like the would for one of the 10 races in the playoffs. That’s a great sign for them too, because Busch said they made zero changes to his car from when they unloaded it off the hauler on Friday and they still came away with a top five finish.
In fact, they were the top non Toyota driver when the dust settled on Sunday night.
So, as they enter the playoffs, maybe we shouldn’t sleep on Busch. Tonight is a great sign.
