Ron Capps first took over the NHRA Funny Car points lead back in late April at Charlotte. He’s never given it back since. Now, he heads to the 30th annual NHRA Northwest Nationals, the 16th of 24 events in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, hoping to land in victory circle for a second straight year on Sunday afternoon in Seattle.
Capps, earned his first win in the Pacific Northwest last year, which also helped propel him to his first career championship later on in the season too. This weekend, Capps is searching for a second straight triumph in Seattle but also extend his Funny Car points lead in the process. He’s won six races in 15 starts this season, including two over the last four races.
But, he’s got to hope Tommy Johnson Jr. doesn’t get in his way again.
Johnson, sits fifth in Funny Car points, with one victory in 2017. But, Johnson has been Capps’ nemesis lately. The duo have faced off the last four consecutive races, with Johnson knocking Capps off in three of them.
Johnson, beat Capps in the second round in Norwalk, and the opening round the last two events at Denver and Sonoma. Will he eliminate him for a third straight race weekend and for the fourth time in five races?
Capps, got the better of Johnson in the final round at Chicago though, so this will be a tight, intense battle to watch in Seattle.
