It should come to no surprise at all that Team Penske was strong in the two NASCAR XFINITY Series practice sessions at Watkins Glen International on Friday. Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano have combined to win two of the last three XFINITY Series races on the upstate New York track and dominated the speed charts this year as well. So, to no avail, Keselowski led session No. 1 and Logano quickest in final practice.
Keselowski, turned a lap of 122.200 in his No. 22 Ford in the first practice, as that lap was the quickest of the entire day. Kyle Busch was right behind in his No. 18 Toyota in second with a speed of 121.586 mph in his Joe Gibbs Racing entry. Logano, was third in the first session with a lap of 121.501 mph in his No. 12 Ford, while Paul Menard (121.371 mph) and Kyle Larson (120.744 mph) rounded out the top five.
In final practice, it was Logano’s turn on top, with a speed of 121.948 mph. Logano, is looking for a three-peat in the Zippo 200 (2 p.m. ET/NBCSN/MRN) on Saturday, as he won the race the last two years there.
Busch, was once again second with a lap of 121.412 mph, while Keselowski kept the same top three in both practice with a speed of 121.084 mph. Ryan Reed was fourth with a lap of 120.617 mph, while Menard was fifth with a speed of 120.516 mph.
It’s fitting that both sessions were dominated by Cup drivers, with eight of the top nine speed in session No. 1 being Cup regulars and seven of the top eight in final practice.
Justin Allgaier was the top XFINITY Series regular of the day being sixth and 10th respectively.
The sessions were dominated by Cup regulars:
Brad Keselowski- 1st, 3rd
Joey Logano- 3rd, 1st
Kyle Busch- 2nd, 2nd
Paul Menard- 4th, 5th
Kyle Larson- 5th, 6th
Erik Jones- 7th, 8th
Kevin Harvick- 8th, 7th
Ty Dillon- 10th, 14th
