Madison, Ill – All season long in Pro Mazda competition, it’s been a Victor Franzoni and Anthony Martin show. The top two drivers in the series points standings have traded victories through all nine races this year. That didn’t change on Saturday evening at the Gateway Motorsports Park either.
Martin, started on the pole in his No. 8 Mazda and led the first 18 laps. It looked like he would cruise to a fifth win of the season and extend his points lead. But, Franzoni started second and stayed on his rivals tail all race long before finally getting by in his No. 23 Mazda on Lap 18. He’d lead the rest of the way en route to his sixth victory of the season for the 21-year old Brazilian and his 10th podium.
Franzoni, would lead 36 of the 54 laps.
Now, Franzoni reinherits the points lead heading to the final race weekend next week at Watkins Glen. There will be a doubleheader that weekend with this battle going to be an intense one at that.
Martin, 22, finished second for his ninth podium of the season and trails Franzoni by just two points in the standings.
Rookie Carlos Cunha brought his No. 81 Mazda home third while TJ Fischer finished fourth in his No. 82 Mazda.
Jeff Green finished fifth in his No. 60 Mazda.
