The Southern 500’s throwback paint schemes are to honor past drivers in the 1980s or 1990s era. One driver will have a throwback scheme of his own car in the 90s.
Derrike Cope revealed today that he will drive Premium Motorsports’ No. 55 Chevrolet in September’s Southern 500 (6:30 p.m. ET/NBCSN/MRN) at the Darlington Raceway. His paint scheme will be his Mane ‘n Tail colors that he drove in 1994 for Bobby Allison Motorsports.
“I’m looking forward to taking a step back in time and partnering with Mane ‘n Tail Shampoo again as I did when I was with Bobby Allison in the 90’s,” Cope said in a media release. “Those were productive years and I am excited to see that color scheme on the track.”
Cope, 58, drove the No. 12 that season, and will have the actual sponsor themselves back for the Darlington race too. He also won the 1990 Daytona 500 too, that was in the Purolator colors.
