Lexington, OH – Santi Urrutia has to hope the Indy Lights Series visits the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course more. Last year, Urrutia started on the pole in both races and won each as a result.
In the two qualifying sessions for both races this weekend from the 2.258-mile road course, Urrutia qualified on the pole for the third time and second for Sunday’s race.
In Saturday’s race No. 1, Urrutia used his pole to his advantage again. He checked out in his No. 5 Mazda and led all 30 laps en route to his first victory of the 2017 season and fifth of his Indy Lights career.
Three of his five career wins are at Mid-Ohio.
Colton Herta came away with his fifth career podium in his No. 98 Mazda, bringing him home second on Saturday afternoon for his seventh top five of the season.
Another rookie in Nico Jamin, Herta’s teammate, brought his No. 27 Mazda home third for his fourth top five this year, all of which on the podium too.
The podium finishers of this race were gifted bad races by the top two in the points standings. Points leader Kyle Kaiser has four podiums in his last five races and nine top 10’s over his last 10 starts on the season, but he finished a disappointing 12th on Saturday.
Second in the points in Matheus Leist had seven top five finishes in his last eight races entering this weekend but came home 11th.
Tomorrow, those two will start in the back again, this time ninth and 13th respectively.
The series will run Race No. 2 on Sunday afternoon at 1:20 p.m. ET. Colton Herta will lead the field to green.
