Luck Of a Caution, Josef Newgarden Gains 33 Points En Route To 2nd Toronto Victory

Josef Newgarden had a good car this weekend but likely just a top five car not a podium caliber one. The top three cars all weekend long were Simon Pagenaud, Helio Castroneves and Graham Rahal. Unfortunately for them, Tony Kanaan got into the tire barriers, bringing out a caution in the middle of the first pit sequence.

Fortunately for Newgarden, he had just hit pit road when the caution came out.

That would put Newgarden’s No. 2 Chevrolet in the lead and he’d never look back en route to his second victory since joining Team Penske and second in the Honda Indy Toronto.

Newgarden, started seventh on Sunday and was fourth when the caution came out. But, with how everything played out, it was a perfect points day for him too, as with Scott Dixon and Will Power’s first lap incident, mixed with the field basically being flipped, Newgarden made up 33 points in the standings, going from 56 points out to 23 heading to Mid-Ohio in two weeks.

It was Newgarden’s fifth career IndyCar victory, two of which in this very race as he last won in 2015 at Toronto.

Alexander Rossi would bring his No. 98 Honda home runner-up, 1.8704-seconds behind Newgarden. It was just his second career IndyCar podium, the other an Indy 500 victory in 2016.

Hometown hero James Hinchcliffe would come home third in his No. 5 Honda for the second straight year, while Marco Andretti and Pagenaud would finish fourth and fifth respectively.

Castroneves, Rahal and Dixon would come home eighth, ninth and 10th respectively. Power would finish last in 21st.

The series has a week off before returning to action in two weeks at Mid-Ohio.
