Askew Wins For 7th Time This Season, Takes USF2000 Victory In Race 1 at Mid-Ohio

Lexington, OH – Oliver Askew is certainly well on his way to the Mazda Road to Indy scholarship that will land him a ride in the Pro Mazda Series in 2018. Askew, drove a phenomenal race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on Friday, reaching victory lane for the seventh time in 12 races this season.

Oliver Askew wins the USF2000 race at Mid-Ohio

Askew, 20, started on the pole and led all 21 laps en route to the dominating victory at the 2.258-mile road course.

A winner two weeks ago in Toronto in Parker Thompson brought his No. 90 Mazda home second crossing the finish line by 1.3282-seconds behind Askew’s No. 3 Mazda.

Rookie Rinus VeeKay would bring his No. 21 Mazda home third while Lucas Kohl and Calvin Ming rounded out the top five.

Askew, looked to be easily crusing to a win until a short caution came out for rookie Moises de la Vara getting off course in Turn 4.

“The penalty doesn’t change my mindset,” Askew said of his win. “The focus is to just keep on winning races and the championship will come in the end. We have the speed to qualify on pole and that’s huge here because it is quite difficult to pass. There was a ton of pressure going into this weekend and that pressure is still there. Cape Motorsports has dominated here the past few years, winning every race, so I know I’ll have a fast car again tomorrow and can go for the pole and the win again.”

Askew leads VeeKay by 19 points heading into Saturday’s race.
