Regan Smith will make his return to the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series this weekend, as he will fill in for injured Aric Almirola in the No. 43 Ford for Richard Petty Motorsports. Smith, will drive in Saturday night’s Monster Energy Open (6 p.m. ET/FS1/MRN) in a substitute role, as Almirola suffered a compression fracture to his T5 vertebra as a result of a scary multi-car accident last Saturday night at the Kansas Speedway.
An update on Almirola’s condition will be given at the Charlotte Motor Speedway at 11 a.m. ET on Friday morning, with Almirola RPM CEO Brian Moffitt and William Heisel who’s the director or OrthoCarolina Motorsports.
Smith, has made 211 Cup starts over the course of his career, with his last race coming at Homestead just last season. He has one career win, the 2011 Southern 500, to go along with 13 top 10’s.
No word on if Almirola will need a replacement for the Coca-Cola 600 or not.
